We Remember: September 11, 2001

Some days ask nothing of us but to stop, and to remember. On September 11, we honor the lives lost, the first responders who ran toward the danger, and the unity that rose out of that day. We remember.

We Remember: September 11, 2001

Some days ask nothing of us but to stop, and to remember.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, nearly three thousand people left for work, boarded a flight, or reported for duty and never came home. In the hours that followed, we watched firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and ordinary strangers run toward the danger that everyone else was running from — many of them giving their own lives so that others might live.

In the days after, something else happened too. Neighbors checked on neighbors. Strangers stood in line for hours to give blood. Flags appeared on porches and overpasses from coast to coast. For a moment, the things that usually divide us fell away, and we remembered that we are, first and always, one people.

Never forget. To the lives lost, the families who carry that loss every day, and the first responders and service members who answered the call — we honor you.

More than two decades later, we still teach our children what happened that day, not to relive the fear, but to pass on the courage, the sacrifice, and the unity that rose out of the ashes. That is the part worth carrying forward.
