Cigna Is Leaving the ACA Marketplace in 2027: What Members Need to Know

Fast take: If you have a Cigna individual or family plan, it won’t renew for 2027. Cigna is exiting the ACA individual market, affecting about 369,000 members across 11 states. Your plan ends December 31, 2026 — but if you act during open enrollment, you can move to new coverage with no gap. Here’s who’s affected and exactly what to do.

What’s happening

Cigna announced in April 2026 that it is pulling out of the individual ACA market to focus on its larger business lines — pharmacy benefits, specialty services, and employer group plans. It described the individual marketplace as a small, shrinking part of its business. For members, the reason matters less than the result: Cigna individual plans will no longer be sold or renewed for 2027. This affects individual and family plans only — Cigna’s employer group, Medicare Advantage, and supplemental products are not affected.

Am I affected?

You’re affected if you have a Cigna individual or family plan (bought on your own, not through an employer) in one of these 11 states:

Arizona · Colorado · Florida · Georgia · Illinois · Indiana · Mississippi · North Carolina · Tennessee · Texas · Virginia

This applies to both on-exchange plans (through HealthCare.gov or your state marketplace) and off-exchange Cigna individual plans.

What happens if you do nothing

This is the part that catches people off guard. When a carrier leaves the market, the marketplace may automatically move you to a “similar” plan from a different company so you’re not left uninsured. That sounds helpful — but the auto-selected plan is chosen by a computer, not by whether it covers your doctors, your prescriptions, or fits your budget.

The risk: On January 1, 2027 you could wake up on a plan that no longer includes your primary doctor, drops a medication you take, or costs more than it needs to — all without you choosing it.

What you should do now

You don’t have to figure this out alone, and you shouldn’t leave it to an auto-assignment. The right steps:

  • 1. Don’t wait for the auto-switch. Choose your own 2027 plan during open enrollment so you control what’s covered.
  • 2. Match the plan to your doctors and prescriptions. Confirm your providers are in-network and your medications are covered before you enroll.
  • 3. Protect your subsidy. If you get a premium tax credit today, make sure it carries to your new plan — and check whether you now qualify for more.
  • 4. Enroll before the deadline so your new coverage starts January 1 with no gap.

Key dates for 2027 coverage

Good to know

  • Enroll after Dec 15 and your start date is usually pushed to Feb 1
  • Every marketplace plan is guaranteed-issue — no denial for pre-existing conditions
  • Many of the same doctors are in other carriers’ networks

Will I lose my doctors or my subsidy?

Not necessarily — but only if you pick the right plan. Many of the same doctors and hospitals are in other carriers’ networks, and every ACA marketplace plan is guaranteed-issue: you can’t be denied or charged more for pre-existing conditions or your health history. Any premium subsidy you qualify for applies to your new plan too. The key is comparing plans before you enroll so you keep what matters and don’t overpay.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cigna leaving the ACA marketplace completely?

Cigna is exiting the individual ACA marketplace (plans people buy on their own) for 2027. Its employer group and other business lines are not affected.

When does my Cigna plan end?

December 31, 2026. It will not automatically renew into a Cigna plan for 2027.

Do I have to switch, or will it happen automatically?

You may be auto-enrolled into another carrier’s plan if you do nothing — but that plan is picked for you and may not fit. It’s far better to choose your own during open enrollment.

Will a new plan cost more?

Not always. Premiums vary by carrier, and your subsidy carries over. Comparing plans is the only way to know — and often there’s a comparable or better option.

Does it cost anything to work with an advisor?

No. A licensed independent advisor is paid by the carriers, so there’s no fee to you for help comparing and enrolling.
